Rare George II mahogany armchair, John Gordon circa 1755-1760, carved molded-channel frame, cartouche padded backrest, shaped toprail, carved with stylized acanthus and bell husks, leaf-and-bead scrolling handrest, foliate fan centering molded seatrail, leaf-carved cabriole legs; BH38 3/4" SH15" W25 1/2" D24"

Her deceased sale, New York, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 3-5 December 1975, lot 469 purchased by Georgia private collector

Other Notes: Chair frame designed in the Louis XV style. The palmette spray carving on the suite of furniture supplied in the early 1760s for the stately Spencer House, the London home of John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer (1734-1783), and are attributed to the cabinet shop of John Gordon of Swallow Street.

The current upholstery is over old period needlework. This chair formerly with old Arthur S. Vernay label, now missing, reference old photo of underside of this chair.

Condition statement: Minor pulling to upholstery. Old repairs to joints of crestrail and one foot. Nick to back leg. Scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use.
