Rare early book: De L'Esprit Helvetius, Claude-Adrien. Chez Durand, Paris, 1758. First edition, second issue. Paris: Chez Durand, 1758. Period gilt and mottled full calf, marble endpapers, and red edges. Bound with ARRESTS DE LA COUR DE PARLEMENT. Paris: Chez P,G. Simon, 23 Jan. 1759. and MANDEMENT DE MONSEIGNEUR L'ARCHEVEQUE DE PARIS. Paris: Chez Durand, 1758.

Other Notes: This is a first edition, second issue, of a controversial work first published the same year. "Helvetius's synthesis of sensationalist and materialist philosophy in De l'Esprit". The first issue was condemned, banned and burned by the Church and the Sorbonne for its uncompromising atheism. It was regarded as dangerously revolutionary by the Court of Louis XV, and publicly condemned by Parliament. It was subsequently banned and burned, and today there are only few known copies of the first issue.
