French gilt-bronze and porcelain clock and barometer, Japy Freres & Cie circa 1870, ornate bronze case adorned with ribbons and fruit; each inset with two painted panels depicting putti with astrolabe and astronomical instruments; the cartel clock centering enameled dial marked: BALTHAZARD A PARIS; works marked: PIERLOT, PARIS, 182, and JAPY FRERES & CIE; the matching barometer dial marked: PASSEMANT AU LOUVRE; H26 1/4" W10 3/4" D3 1/4" (2pcs)

Literature: de Bellaigue, G. THE JAMES A DE ROTHSCHILD COLLECTION AT WADDESDON MANOR: FURNITURE, CLOCKS AND GILT BRONZES. Fribourg, 1976, Vol. I, pp.44-7.

Other Notes: This clock and barometer set are fine, late 19th century examples by Japy Freres of related earlier example delivered to Madame du Barry in 1769 by the Simon-Philippe Poirier. They were then described as 'Un Barometre & Thermometre, de Passement, montes tres richement en bronze dores d'or moulu et ornes de trois plaques de porcelainede France à Enfants en miniature cy 10561I.' The Sevres plaquettes depict putti with astrolabe and astrological devices, influenced by the 1769 Transit of Venus, when the planet crossed the sun. It is said that the King of France personally explained the phenomenon to his favorite mistress.
The 18th century examples can be found in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert, Louvre, and the Metropolitan Museum, as well as nearly identical related compagnon barometer reference Sotheby's-New York 19 April 2007, Lot 43, and another with offered at Adrian Alan-London, Ref.No. B64870

Condition statement: cases in good condition, some wear to gilding on porcelain. Lacking keys, appears to be in working condition. Please note T&C (paragraph 9) with regard to the condition reports and sale of clocks and watches.
