French carved marble Napoleon silhouette early 19th century, fine bust contained within ormolu-mounted velvet-lined shadowbox frame; behind the framed was discovered the following early written note:
This marble silhouette of Napoleon was presented by the Marquis de Lafayette to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Md. [Maryland visit of 1824] on the occasion of his visit to Baltimore in 1824. Mr. Carroll was down with gout. Mr. Lafayette and Mr. Carroll were very dear friends and always communicated in the French language, as Mr. Carroll was educated in Rheims and in Paris. Mr. Carroll was always a great admirer of Napoleon.
Charles Carroll was the last signer of the Declaration of Independence to bid good-bye to the scenes of earth. He was born Annapolis in 1737 and departed this life at Carrollton, Md. in 1832.
