Aesthetic faux bamboo writing desk, possibly by RJ Horner & Co circa 1886-1900 superstructure with three-quarter gallery and pair of small drawers flanking central well, raised over writing slope concealing single divided drawer, lower case fitted on sides with two drawers and one door, on legs unified by undertier. (Crack at upper left corner beneath gallery, missing one escutcheon, canvas writing panel deteriorating) H53 1/2" W32" D23 3/8" *Note: The firm of R. J. Horner & Co., established in 1886 on East 23rd Street in New York City, produced an assortment of furniture predominantly in the Aesthetic Movement style. They often identified their products with porcelain placques nailed to the individual pieces. Horner first advertised imitation bamboo made of maple in 1890 as the Japanese aesthetic became popular as a result of the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. *Reference: Anna Tobin Di'Ambrosio, ed.
