Alice Standish Buell New York (1892-1964) ROYAL STREET BALCONIES, NEW ORLEANS etching, unframed signed & titled: lower margin in pencil image size: H10 1/8" W7 1/2" *Artist biography: Alice Standish Buell was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but later moved to White Plains, New York, and Woodstock, Vermont. She studied at Oberlin College in Ohio, New York's Art Students League as well as with printmaker Martin Lewis (1881-1962.) A member of the board of the Art Students League for six years, Buell also served as the Secretary of the Pen and Brush Club from 1956 to 1958. Her etchings were exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and other museums, and she participated in Chicago's Century of Progress exposition in 1933 and 1934, as well as New York's World's Fair in 1939. She had studios in Woodstock, Vermont and Sanibel, Florida-places that often became the subject of her work. Buell won several awards from distinguished institutions, including the Philadelphia Printmakers Club in 1939 and first prize for graphic art from the National Association of Women Artists in 1947. Her prints are in the collection of the Library of Congress and the Art Students League among others.
