Other Notes: Isaac Scott Hathaway was a forerunner and pioneer of African American art in the early to mid 20th century, during the heat of the Civil Rights movement. Hathaway was a highly skilled and trained sculptor and ceramicist attending Chandler College of Kentucky, Pittsburg Normal College of Kansas, The Cincinnati Arts Academy and the College of Ceramics at the University of New York. Mr. Hathaway was also a founding member of the ceramics department at Tuskegee College in Alabama where he was department head from 1937-1947. In 1946 Hathaway was commissioned by Harry S. Truman as the first African American to design a United States coin. Isaac Scott Hathaway's work can be viewed at the museum bearing his name in Lexington, Kentucky.
