Description:

American Classical mahogany sideboard New York City, circa 1810-1820 architectonic split backsplash centered and flanked by pineapple finials, with highly figured panels and central table, over rectangular case fitted with drawers and doors bisected by engaged three-quarter columns with acanthus capitals, on stepped base and hairy paw feet. (Stabilized cracks across top, good restored condition) H61 3/4" W77 3/4" D27" *Note: Notable for its carving and skillful use of highly figured mahogany veneers of different patterns, this sideboard is impressive in its scale yet balanced in its overall design and decoration. These factors and the components of the piece clearly place this piece within a large group of elegant and sophisticated case pieces produced by New York City cabinetshops in the early nineteenth century. The architectural qualities of the piece were meant to complement the interiors within which the piece was to be placed. Close attention to execution, decoration and detail is applied to each of the primary decorative elements. The tripartite backsplash, pineapple finials, carved and veneered columns with Corinthian capitals and paw feet are of the highest order. The sideboard was likely made for the Southern market as it descended in the family of Welcome Stone, a prominent attorney in Washington, Georgia in the nineteenth century. The piece was acquired by the present owners directly from his descendants.
