American coin silver coffeepot by Baldwin Gardiner New York, NY (circa 1827-38) flame finial on domed cover, reeded baluster body, decorated with acanthus and bound reed motifs and ebonized wood handle; marked: B. Gardiner. (Good condition) H11", and 38.3oz all in *Provenance: The Talbotts and Hiltons were descendants of Alexander Turney Stewart (1803-76) who in 1820 immigrated to New York City and established himself as a dry-goods wholesaler and retailer. By 1850 Stewart owned the city's largest retailer Wanamaker's, and developed our modern day department store concept. Stewart was one of the three richest men of the Gilded Age - Vanderbilt was the richest, but Alexander T. Stewart and John J. Astor were next in line. His home on Fifth Avenue reflected the great wealth and his social status, and was considered to be one of the finest in America. *Reference: Gregory, Alexis.
