Description:

American mahogany chest of drawers, possibly Charleston, SC circa 1790
rectangular top with molded edge over two short and three long drawers, resting on bracket feet.
H34" W42" D21"

Provenance: Dover Plantation, Georgetown, South Carolina descended in family to present owner.

Other Notes: Dover Plantation was owned by Mrs. Henry M. Sage and was once part of the ancient Winyah Barony. In the mid-20th century, Dover Plantation was considered one of the South Carolina lowcountry's most impressive estates. Mrs. Sage was a preservationist and an avid collector of American furniture; her interest in antiques started in the first part of the 1900's and continued throughout her lifetime.

It has been said that she had an extraordinary enthusiasm for antiques and was involved in all things related to Charleston. In his 1955 book, CHARLESTON FURNITURE 1700-1825, E. Milby Burton mentions Mrs. Sage in the acknowledgments. "Finally, I shall ever be indebted to Mrs. Henry Manning Sage, of Albany, New York, and Dover Plantation, Georgetown, South Carolina, who made this work possible. For her encouragement and advice, which I have enjoyed for many years, I cannot too strongly express my deepest appreciation."

The story of Dover Plantation is chronicled in Alberta Morel Lachicotte's 1955 book GEORGETOWN RICE PLANTATIONS. The history of Dover as recounted by Ms. Lachicotte is indeed a fascinating story of how Mrs. Sage's efforts at preservation literally resurrected the house once at Woodlawn Plantation from total destruction. The account of Dover includes the names of such famous South Carolinians as Landgrave Thomas Smith, General Francis Marion and General Peter Horry.
