Description:

American mahogany three-part dining table late 19th century
D-ends and central section with drop leaves, all on bead-and channel legs.

Provenance: From a Greenville, South Carolina private collection, purchased in the mid 1980's from Mrs. Malcolm Lovell. Mr. Lovell was the scion of a New England textile family which included the infamous Lizzie Borden among its members. Mrs. Lovell was from Edgefield, South Carolina and returned there after Mr. Lovell's death.

Other Notes: According to Mrs. Lovell, Mr. Lovell was an investment banker and they lived in Washington DC at the time of the outbreak of WWII. The Lovells bought the table from the German Embassy when the German Ambassador returned to Berlin. The table was used as a banquet table, seating up to 24 people when fully extended, in the Embassy's dining room. Mrs. Lovell understood that the wood for the table came from Santo Domingo.

    Condition:
  • Repolished, with restoration and alteration. Very good condition, with minor scuffs and scratches. Filler strips lie over rule joints when leaves are down.
