American needlework alphabet sampler dated 1819
floral border centering bands of script and black letter sequences over scene of figures, trees and Georgian buildings above maker's inscription: Worked by Mary G. Whitney in the twelth [sp] year of her age, under the care of Susan Pips, April 13th 1819.

Provenance: Estate of the late Mr. & Mrs. Peter Trenholm, Abbeville, South Carolina.

    Condition:
  • Slight fraying to edges of foundation fabric, heavy losses of silk stitching to six flowers across bottom and bottom two in lower right corner, other work with minor or no losses.
