American school (circa 1850) PAIR OF PORTRAITS: MR. AND MRS. HENRY M. CRANE OF NEW YORK
oil on canvas, in original frames, unsigned, one titled on verso
H34" W26 3/4" overall: H46 1/2" W38 1/2" (2pcs)

Provenance: Property of a Southern gentleman's private collection, Charleston, South Carolina.

Other Notes: Henry M. Crane was a wealthy and influential businessman from Schenectady, New York who owned a thread manufactory at Mohawkville in Rotterdam. He was also a member of the New York State Assembly. Sometime in the 1870s he made a series of unfortunate business decisions and found himself nearly penniless. He moved out West to seek new business opportunities and eventually became a porter at the Pacific Hotel in San Fransisco. He was rescued financially by his brother in 1884 and was able to return to prominence. As explained in the article: "After Many Days." THE NEW YORK TIMES 16 July, 1884.
Mr. Crane was also a possible investor of the South Carolina plantation, Longwood.
