Provenance: South Carolina private collection

Other Notes: The 50-foot by 150-foot lot on Newberry Street in Aiken, South Carolina was presented as a challenge to Thomas Hastings. The distinguished New York architect, known for such projects as the New York Public Library and the Frick Mansion, was commissioned to construct a home that met all the requirements of an affluent 1920's winter estate on this small lot. The impetus for such a project was Mrs. Hastings's interest in horses, which frequently brought the couple south to enjoy the warm climate and equestrian-focused community of Aiken. By 1929, two years after purchasing the small property, the Hastings' winter home was constructed.

Impressively, Hastings was able to accommodate a five-bedroom house, along with a garden, stables, a garage, and a buggy shed. The house featured five bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, including a maid's quarters. Three of these bedrooms were on the first floor, along with a living room, dining room, kitchen, a butler's pantry, and four fireplaces. The second floor included a storage area, a bedroom and bathroom for the maid, and an additional guest room. A porch on the first level functioned as an entrance to the home as well as an area in which to sit and gaze over the landscaped courtyard and the stables, which held four to six horses. Over the years the house has passed through nine different owners and renovations to the property have accommodated modern conveniences. To a large extent, however, the design has remained essentially the same. Perhaps the largest adjustment was made to the stables in the late 1980s, when they were transformed into a social space, including a ballroom and dining room.

Thomas Hastings's creative solution to a unique design challenge remains a beacon of architectural ingenuity in Aiken's Historic District. The estate was beautifully captured in a still and quiet photo series from the 1930's by the inimitable photojournalist, André Kertész.
