Anglo-Indian engraved ivory tea caddy Vizagapatam, circa 1795
rectangular form with molded stepped lid, body decorated with engraved panels depicting buildings in landscape with borders of scrolling flowers and foliage, flanked by metal handles, divided interior with metal liners, on shaped bracket feet.

Provenance: Another tea caddy similarly engraved with buildings conceived in the oriental taste is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (see: Amin Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, Victoria and Albert Museum, 2001, p. 205, No. 49), and others are recorded containing contemporary English silver boxes.

  • Several burn-in or filler/type repairs to panels and corners. Miter joints of top have opened and have been reinforced; inside of top relined with felt.
