Description:

Bartolome Esteban Murillo (after) Spanish (1618-1682)
THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
oil on canvas, framed, unsigned
H65 1/2" W52" framed: H73 1/2" W60"

Provenance: Property from an Aiken, South Carolina private collector.

    Condition:
  • Painting has been relined with new linen backing using wax method. Surface appears to have been cleaned, and it also appears relining was completed to restore craquelure and sagging canvas. Touch-up painting is visible under UV mostly to the robe on the Virgin''s left knee and to her robe and the cherubs just to her left. There is also a 2" band along the entire bottom width that has extensive retouching, probably where the canvas rested against the stretcher. Other minor inpainting and overpainting is visible throughout sky and cherub figures. Due to the new lining it is difficult to tell the age but we are of the opinion that this painting probably dates from the mid 19th century.
