circa 1930, serial no. 173146; manufactured by Fabrique Nationale, Herstal Belgium; rare barrel with single brass bead sight on ventilated top rib marked and gold-filled POUR TIR AUX PIGEONS, left rear of barrel marked: FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE HERSTAL - BELGIQUE / * ACIER SPECIAL" -Acier Special referred to an improvement in steel strength from the 1930s- and hand-engraved: ALLESTITO PER IL SIG. CAV. UFF. EDOARDO CASCIANO-ROMA; with forward safety; factory blue finish overall; modified straight-hand stock checkered at wrist and beavertail forearm with gloss finish; black hard rubber BISHOP buttplate.

Literature: AUTO-5 STANDARD - 1903-1940 MFG. 12 ga. (introduced in Sept., 1903, Browning discontinued imports Dec., 1903), 16 ga. (introduced in 1909, but not in the U.S.). In 1923, Browning resumed importing both 12 and 16 ga. in four grades that differ in engraving, inlays, and grade of wood. Both gauges were available with 26-32 in. barrel, recoil operated, 4 shot mag. with cutoff, various chokes, checkered pistol grip stock, horn buttplate, also available in a 3 shot version with shorter magazine tube to limit capacity to 3 rounds from 1932-1940. Importation temporarily ceased in 1940 with the German occupation of Belgium, serial no. range 1-224, 596 (12 ga.) and 1-126,175 (16 ga.).
