Benjamin Guerard, South Carolina land grant (1740-1788) to Ephraim Mitchell, administrator, three hundred acres in the District of Ninety Six, dated first day of Sept., 1784. (Yellowed with scattered foxing) H13" W16 1/8" *Biography: Benjamin Guerard was born in Charleston in 1740. Guerard offered his entire estate to raise funds to provide for his fellow prisoners while being held by the British as a prisoner of war, and in 1782 he served on the council that negotiated the withdrawal of the British from Charleston. In 1783, the South Carolina General Assembly elected Guerard for governor by secret ballot. He was the first Huguenot to be elected governor and served until 1785. Guerard died December 21, 1788 in Charleston.
