Other Notes: When Napoleon Bonaparte and his army embarked on his Egyptian Campaign in 1798, their ultimate goal was to establish an alternative route to India and its riches. However, their defeat by the British at Abuqir left them stranded in Egypt for three years. Having brought with them not only soldiers, but scientists and artists as well, they recorded virtually everything they encountered. It is thanks to the work of this commission that ancient and modern Egyptian monuments, as well as many aspects of Egypt's natural history were recorded in an exacting and historically important manner. It took thirty years for these illustrative records to be prepared and published.
