Illustrations by Anna Heyward Taylor, Augustine T. S. Stoney, Alice R. Huger Smith (in color), Elizabeth O'Neill Verner and Albert Simons. Limitation page at back of book contains ink signatures of contributors: Augustine Smythe, Herbert Ravenel Sass, Alfred Huger, Thomas R. Waring, Alice R. Huger Smith, Albert Simons, Augustine T. S. Stoney, Josephine Pinckney, Catherine C. Hutson, Carolina P. Rutledge, DuBose Heyward, Beatrice Ravenel, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Robert W. Gordon, Archibald Rutledge and Anna Heyward Taylor. DuBose Heyward wrote the chapter "The Negro in the Low-Country." One section containing the words and music of Negro spirituals. Archibald Rutledge wrote the chapter "Plantation Lights and Shadows."

    Condition:
  • Slight rubbing at head and tail of spine, and to gilt of the last word of title. Embossed seal on cover reading "Society for the Preservation of Spirituals" in very good condition. Hinges intact and binding is tight; interior covers with some tanning. Some pages with light scattered foxing. Overall good condition consistent with age.
