Description:

Books: Gone With The Wind with letter signed by author published 1937
Mitchell, Margaret. GONE WITH THE WIND. New York: MacMillan. 1037 pages, with rare personal letter taped to last free endpaper, dated Sept. 17, 1936 on Margaret Mitchell's stationery, reads as follows:
Dear Ruth: [Ruth Hall Graham]
Thank you for your letter and all the fine things you said about 'Gone with the Wind.' It is nice to hear such things and especially nice to hear them from kin folks.

I wish I could accept your invitation to be your guest at the meeting at The Town Theatre but I just cannot do it and I am sorry. These are the reasons. I lost too much weight from overworking that I am having to stay home and stuff myself and try to get fat. In the second place, I am having trouble with my eyes, due to too much close work. I am going through the miseries of getting new glasses now. Lastly, the publishers want me to come to New York for the literary blow-out at the end of October. Against that indefinite trip I am trying to get rested and get my eyes in shape. The doctor wants me to stay at home and stay quiet until that time.

I would love to see Columbia for I have never been there and yet I read so much about it while digging up the background of my book that I feel as though I have walked its streets many times. Thanks again for the invitation and please express my regrets to the committee that I cannot accept it.

Affectionately,
[signed] Peggy
