Other Notes: John Caldwell Cahoun (March 18, 1782-March 31, 1850) was a leading United States politician and political philosopher from South Carolina during the first half of the 19th century. He was best known as being an advocate of states' rights, limited government and nullification.

"For all of his flaws, and the tragedy involved in the employment of his vast talents in the defense of racial slavery, Calhoun still stands as second only to James Madison as an original political thinker among practicing politicians in American life." Lacy Ford, THE SOUTH CAROLINA ENCYCLOPEDIA, University of South Carolina Press, Columbia, SC, 2006, Walter Edgar, editor.
