Other Notes: Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1825) was a South Carolina statesman, a Revolutionary War Hero and Delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He came from a wealthy and influential Charleston family and was educated in England and France. He was the older brother of Gov. Thomas Pinckney (1750-1828) and also first cousin of Charles Pinckney (1757-1824) who was a signer of the United States Constitution, and Governor of South Carolina. He married Sarah Middleton in 1773 who was the sister of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Sarah died in 1784 and in 1786 he married Mary Stead who came from a wealthy family of planters in Georgia.
C.C. Pinckney is most celebrated as a Revolutionary War hero. He served as a Captain in George Washington's Continental Army and in 1776 participated in the successful defense of the Battle of Sullivan's Island. He then joined Washington's forces near Philadelphia for the Battle of Brandywine and Battle of Germantown. He led forces in the failed attempt to retake Savannah, Georgia in 1779. He then moved to help defend Charleston from the British but was taken prisoner. It is said that he helped keep up the spirits of his fellow Patriot captives by avowing his devotion to his country. He was released in 1782.
Pinckney was the Federalist candidate for Vice President with the incumbent John Adams in the 1800 election but they were defeated by the Democratic-Republicans Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. In 1804 Pinckney was nominated by the Federalists to run for President, but he was again defeated by Thomas Jefferson. He was nominated again in 1808 but lost to James Madison.
Various memorials are named after him including Castle Pinckney, a fort in Charleston Harbor, and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge on the site of the Pinckney family's plantation.

Daniel Ravenel III (1789-1873) was an attorney, banker and writer from Charleston, South Carolina. He was president of the Planters' and Mechanics' bank. He married Caroline Cripps (1791-1844) and they had five children.
