Charles William Smith Virginia (1893-1987) FROM A CHARLESTON WINDOW woodcut, unframed signed: lower left, in plate image size: 8 1/2" W7" *Artist biography: Smith studied at The University of Virginia, Yale and The Corcoran Art School. He taught Graphic Arts at Bennington and University of Virginia and chaired the Art Department at UVA. He published several rare books of his woodcuts and won many awards. His work is in many important collections, including the Whitney Museum, NY Public Library, Art Institute of Chicago and Yale University. His work was recently featured in a major art history publication on the Charleston Renaissance of the 1920s through 40s.
