Description:

Charles X bronze-mounted mahogany desk first quarter 19th century rectangular top with gilt-tooled insert over five drawers, with pullout slides; on columnar legs with round molded feet. (Nicks, scratches consistent with age, small veneer loss of 1/2" x 1" on top, old repairs to veneer, some chips on molding around feet) H30 1/2" W67" D32 1/2" *Provenance: Monsieur and Madame Alphonse Franck, Paris, France. Monsieur Frank was a Parisian playwright who inaugurated the first floor Eiffel Tower auditorium with the performance of "Paris Up In The Air" in June 1892. He was manager of the Theatre du Gymnase and Director of the Theatre Edouard VII, Paris from 1916 until 1930. This was his desk. Madame Alphonse and her daughter were painted by Monsieur Leon Francois Comerre (1850-1916) presently in the collection of Charles Aznavour. Comerre painted the famous actresses and ballerinas of the late 19th and early 20th century Paris. Charles Aznavour re-invented the French chanson, composed more than 600 songs and sold more than 100 million records, becoming in the process an international French mega-star. Monsieur and Madame Frank were the grandparents of the present owner.
