Description:

Chinese armorial porcelain mug and tea caddy circa 1740-50, mug with shell-and-scroll border centering arms of Pace impaling Hackluyt, H5 3/4"; and arrowhead-and-floral spray caddy, each side with arms of Wells, H4 1/2" (2pcs)

Provenance: Estate of Henry Bertram Moog, Jr., Atlanta, Georgia

Literature: Howard, David Sanctuary. CHINESE ARMORIAL PORCELAIN (Vol. I), London, England: Faber & Faber, 1974. p.543

Other Notes: The Pace family are recorded in the 16th century in the Visitations of Leicestershire of whom Thomas Pace was Bishop of Bangor, while Richard and John Pace were both courtiers to Henry VIII, the latter having the right to 'keep, buy and sell ships, and negotiate as to the freightage'. Although no later pedigree seems to be published, a Nathaniel Pace of Cloak Lane in London is recorded as a South Sea director in 1741 and it seems very possible that the service was made for him.

The Hackluyt family with these arms were of Yatton, Co. Hereford, and also of Shropshire, and of this family was Richard Hackluyt, a member of the Worshipful Company of Skinners in London, and his son of the same name, the celebrated collector, traveller and leading adventurer of the Charter of the Virginia Company of London who helped establish the first settlement at Jamestown and was its chief promoter. It seems very likely that the impalement on this service represents a descendant.
