Chinese Export porcelain John Wilkes punch bowl circa 1770-5 exterior front and verso decorated with motto ARMS OF LIBERTY over portrait of John Wilkes and Lord Mansfield within crested cartouches and banners bearing mottos ALWAYS READY IN A GOOD CAUSE and JUSTINE SANS PITIE, and sides and interior with floral sprigs. (Good condition with normal wear) H4 1/4" Dia.10 1/4" *Provenance: Property from the estate of a Southern lady. *Reference: David S. Howard, CHINESE ARMORIAL PORCELAIN, Vol.I, p.16 and Vol.II, pp.12, 292. *Note: Punch bowls such as these formed part of the popular satirical comment surrounding the celebrated libel case against John Wilkes, Member of Parliament for Middlesex, who was sentenced by Lord Chief Justice Mansfield in 1768.
