Description:

Chinese export porcelain palaceware tureen circa 1795-1805, pomegranate finial on shaped cover, and ovoid body flanked by shell handles, decorated with court family large vignette, and accented by small landscape in sepia and iron-red, all on highly decorated gilt-vine design ground; H9 1/2" L14 1/2" W10"

Provenance: Leo & Doris Hodroff collection
New York collection

Literature: Fuch, Ronald & Howard, David. MADE IN CHINA: EXPORT PORCELAIN FROM THE LEO AND DRIS HODROFF COLLECTION AT WINTERTHUR. Winterthur, DE: Henry Francis du Pont Museum, 2005. pp.98-99

Other Notes: The lavishly enameled pattern of this tureen, along with several closely related variant patterns, are sometimes known collectively as "palace ware", due both to their depictions of noble men and women as well as to the belief that something this fine must have been produced in Imperial kilns. The "palace ware" patterns seem to be an outgrowth of the "Mandarin palette" decoration. These Chinese scenic vignette patterns on ornate gilt or color ground were highly fashionable in the 1780s. Today, they are often called "Rockefeller pattern" due to its close association with the famous Rockefeller family of New York, and the collection which was sold for the estate of Nelson Rockefeller in the 1980s.
