Description:

Chippendale carved mahogany card table, possibly Baltimore late 18th century, hinged serpentine top with lobed corners, over straight C-scroll and leaf-carved skirt centering rosette and cabriole legs with acanthus and scroll-carved knees, terminating in ball-and-claw feet; microscopic wood analysis identifies white oak, true mahogany and tulip poplar secondary woods.
H28 7/8" W34" D16 1/2"

Provenance: Pennsylvania private collection. The card table was purchased from the estate sale of Joseph Minutilli (1929-2010) at his farm near Port Royal, Pennsylvania. Mr. Minutilli was the former president of Commercial Credit Corp. (now Citicorp) in Baltimore, Maryland, retiring from that position in 1987. His home in Baltimore was in Roland Park and it is believed that he acquired the table from his neighbor Margaret Davis, whose aunt Loretta Hysan was a prominent pioneer collector of Americana. Mrs. Hysan was possibly the original owner of this table.

Other Notes: A similar example of a card table of American origin may be found in the Winterthur collection, Object ID 1960.1059. The pinched rosette detail on the skirt of this table may be seen incorporated in the carving below the broken-arch crown on a highboy held in the furniture collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art. The highboy is attributed to either Maryland or Pennsylvania.

    Condition:
  • Repaired separation crack on bottom leaf, approx. 10"; replaced glue blocks, but retaining 3 original ones; nicks and scratches to top consistent with age; overall good condition.
