Description:

Civil War era plaid silk dress circa 1850s-60s, with pink, cream, brown and black hues, comprising:
fitted bodice with cap ruffle sleeves and hook enclosures at back, L13"
full skirt, L42"
white cotton lace-bottom underskirt L37"
in box with original fabric scraps and hair ornaments, possibly later (3pcs and scraps)

Other Notes: Cardboard box inscribed: Pink plaid silk dress belonged to Mama and worn in the 1860s. Also as fancy dress as "a belle of the 60's" by K.C. W & won 1st prize in 1939 for best costume.
A label on the side echoes the first inscription but adds: Given to museum by Kate C. Waties. Underskirt was made by Mary [?] McCants.

Mama-refers to Frances Augusta Parker (1830-1909) daughter of John Waring Parker (1803-1882) and Catharine Devaul Calhoun (1807-1892). In 1853 she married Captain John Waties (1828-1872), the son of Thomas Waties (1794-1830) and Maria Huger Rutledge (1794-1840). Katherine Calhoun Waties (1868-1961) was the sister of Mary Sumter (Waties) Thomas (1860-1918) mother of Alva M. Lumpkin.

    Condition:
  • Dress and underskirt with fading, small tears, silk shattering, some staining and other wear as expected with age; dress had minor alterations to fit another wearer (K.C. Waties) in the early 20th century.
