Description:

Classical carved mahogany and needlepoint fire screen America or Continental, circa 1830, shaped, relief-carved frame retaining needlework on polychrome silk depiction of Ruth and Naomi under glass; the frame tilting on telescopic hexagonal standard with Gothic relief carving to concave tripartite base with pierce-carved brackets on carved paw feet.
H48 1/2" W29" D21"

Provenance: Maryland private collection.

Other Notes: Secondary woods by microanalysis are: aspen/cottonwood, white oak and spruce. Visual identification shows the possibility of cherry. The pedestal form and large size of the textile panel are unusual for a fire screen, as is the tilting mechanism allowing the screen to be used in a horizontal position as a table. The textile is original to the screen and is of high quality depicting the first testament bible story of Ruth and Naomi.
