Other Notes: John DePol was born on September 16, 1913 in Greenwich Village New York and would grow to be one of the nation's most prolific wood engravers of the 20th century. Mostly self-taught, DePol began drawing as a boy later learning to make etchings and lithographs. After returning to New York from Ireland where he was stationed during World War II, DePol learned design and printmaking while working for Lewis R. White & Co. A few years later he began illustrating booklets, broadsides, and books and his success continued to grow. Among his many honors and awards, DePol was elected as an Associate of the National Academy of Design (1954) and a National Academician (1979). His works can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Whitney Museum, and Yale University, among others. DePol died on December 15, 2004 in Cliffside Park, New Jersey.
