Document: Lt. John Rutledge Naval order dated 13 May 1861
signed by Confederate Secretary of the Navy Stephen R. Mallory, directing Rutledge to report to Captain Josiah Tattnall at Savannah to take command of the steamer Lady Davis, endorsed by Tattnall on 17 May 1861.

Provenance: Descended in the Rutledge-Rose Family of Charleston, South Carolina. Archive of Confederate Naval Officer Lieutenant John Rutledge (1820-1894), grandson of John Rutledge Jr. (1739-1800), Governor of South Carolina and United States Supreme Court Justice.

Other Notes: John Rutledge joined the US Navy as a midshipman in 1835 and served throughout the world. He resigned his commission in January 1861, after South Carolina had seceded from the Union in December 1860, to join the navy of his native state. He served in the Confederate Navy until the end of the war.
