Documents: Hugh Rose Rutledge Mexican-American War letters including a letter from James Gadsden (1788-1858), of "Gadsden Purchase" fame, introducing Dr. Rutledge to Major General Zachary Taylor, dated Charleston, SC 17 September 1847; together with receipts, invoices, and a monthly report of sick and wounded, dated 1848.

Provenance: Descended in the Rutledge-Rose Family of Charleston, South Carolina. Hugh Rose Rutledge (1823-1915) was brother of Lt. John Rutledge (1820-1894) and grandson of John Rutledge Jr (1766-1818).

Other Notes: Dr. Hugh Rose Rutledge was assistant surgeon with the 2nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. Rutledge served from 10 September 1847 until discharged on 12 July 1848.
