Documents: Lt. John Rutledge Naval orders signed by Thomas W. Brent, Commander, CS Navy Station, Savannah, Georgia to Rutledge 24 April 1862, ordering Rutledge to proceed to Norfolk, Virginia to take command of the gun boat Hampton; 23 June 1862, directing proclamation of directive respecting midshipmen; 15 July 1862, requesting that William Meyer, a Confederate States Marine private, be housed on board the CSS Savannah for "safekeeping;" 16 July 1862, directing a reduction in number of Petty Officers aboard the CSS Savannah; 18 July 1862, directing Rutledge to "hold a strict and thorough survey on the Iron Clad Battery 'Georgia' tendered to the Navy Department in behalf of the Ladies of Georgia;" 23 July 1862, requesting a statement of the number of muskets, rifles and pistols on board the CSS Savannah and naval battery; 28 July 1862, respecting appointment of officers for CSS Savannah; 30 July 1862, order respecting deserters.

Provenance: Descended in the Rutledge-Rose Family of Charleston, South Carolina. Archive of Confederate Naval Officer Lieutenant John Rutledge (1820-1894), grandson of John Rutledge Jr. (1739-1800), Governor of South Carolina and United States Supreme Court Justice.

Other Notes: John Rutledge joined the US Navy as a midshipman in 1835 and served throughout the world. He resigned his commission in January 1861, after South Carolina had seceded from the Union in December 1860, to join the navy of his native state. He served in the Confederate Navy until the end of the war.
