Included in this lot:
Seventeen letters, 1824-1848, written to Massias, a career United States Army officer, by fellow officers, including General Abraham Eustis (1786-1843) and two letters from United States senator Thomas H. Benton (1782-1858). Massias served during the War of 1812, from 1808-1815, and then rejoined the army as a paymaster, a position he retained until his retirement on 23 September 1842. Although in his seventies at the time of the Mexican War, Massias in a letter to the Adjutant General of the United States, Major-General Roger Jones, dated 19 May 1846, offered his services to his country as the commander of a coastal fort. He reminded General Jones that he "was in command of the Fort at Point Petre, Georgia" during the War of 1812. Massias died in Charleston, S. C. and was buried in the Kahad Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone mentioned his military service and also noted that he was "by his last will a generous benefactor...[to his synagogue] and after a provision for several relatives, the bulk of his estate was bequeathed to friends in Charleston, So. Ca.., the home of his choice." Apparently, members of the Rutledge Family were counted among his friends and that explains the presence of his papers in the Rutledge family papers. A belt buckle, inscribed "Major A. A. Massias, U. S. A." is also included in the collection.
