Description:

Federal Neoclassical mahogany two-part banquet table, Norfolk, Virginia circa 1815, rectangular top with rounded corners, over straight skirt, on turned legs with gateleg supports; attributed to the shop of James Woodward.
H28 7/8" W42" L77 1/2" open

Provenance: Maryland private collection

Literature: The lower vase form and multi-bead turned elements on the legs resemble several similar turnings on legs attributed to the shop of James Woodward, Norfolk, Virginia, circa 1810-1820; note pp.29, 30, 31 and 32 in CLASSICAL NORFOLK FURNITURE 1810-1840 by Thomas R.J. Newbern and James R. Melchor.

Other Notes: Conservation report available upon request.

Primary wood is mahogany with mahogany veeners; secondary woods are a variety of conifer for blocking and skirt substrate and either ash or oak for the stay and fly rails.

The underside of the top has vertical saw marks consistent with a large water-powered vertical form saw, owned by Thomas Sully who also sold mahogany boards. There is some similarity in the turnings to the work of Smith and Ghiselin. The two and three-part banquet dining tables were popular in Virginia, particularly in the Norfolk area, which in turn influenced Richmond.
