Other Notes: Bramshill dates to the Doomsday Book of 1086 when the estate was held by Hugh de Port. In 1347 Sir Thomas Foxley, Constable of Windsor Castle was granted permission to enclose 2,500 acres of land as a deer park at Bramshill and Hazeley. Sir Thomas was responsible for the construction of the noble mansion at Bramshill which has drawn comparisons with Windsor Castle. The mansion then passed to the 11th Lord Zouche of Harringworth. Zouche needed a large country mansion to consolidate his position at Court, and he reconstructed the house between 1605 and 1615.
Lord Zouche was considered a well-traveled and cultured gentleman, and he is largely credited for the creation of Bramshill House, walled gardens, maze, and lake as it appears today. The Henley family bought the estate in 1640 and remained at Bramshill until 1699 when it was sold to Sir John Cope whose descendants remained at Bramshill for 236 years. The Copes had a significant influence on both the fabric of the building and its landscape.
Much of what we know of the changes to the house and grounds over this period are described in a book by Sir William Cope (12th Bart.) 'Bramshill: Its History & Architecture' published in 1883, which details the contents, renovations, and alterations to the house.
The chairs once formed part of a grand suite of furniture installed at Bramshill in Hampshire, appeared first in the Long Gallery and were later moved to the Chapel Room. The suite appears to have been supplied to Sir Monnoux Cope, who succeeded as 7th Bart. of Hanwell and Bramshill in 1749, as part of a refurnish plan. There is evidence that Cope commissioned a pair of mirrors from Berkeley Square cabinet-maker William Linnell (d. 1765) from Bramshill (now at Eversly Manor). The V&A Museum collection contains drawings closely related to these mirrors.
A suite of 'gothic' seat furniture from the Chapel Room of Bramshill with cluster-column legs and needlework covers includes a pair of chairs sold at Christie's-New York, 16 April 1994, lot 156, and pair of stools sold from the Estate of Mrs. John Hay Whitney, Sotheby's-New York, 23 April 1999, lot 119; and more recently two other pairs from this suite of six sold at Christie's-New York, 30 April 2007, lot 69, and is 27 Oct. 2015, lot 19.
Condition: Condition statement:
One chair has chip at crestrail near carving. Also back missing small piece of wood at crestrail near carving. Fabric tear about 4". Other with several minor old repairs to back and side lattices. Both with scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use. Overall good condition.
