Description:

Four Classical carved mahogany side chairs, possibly Thomas Day mid 19th century
scrolling crest surmounted with pierced heart-form cartouche flanked by sprays of leaves, over mirror-image splat and serpentine slip seat in conforming rails, on saber legs.

Other Notes: Thomas Day, master cabinetmaker and entrepreneur, was born in 1801 in Dinwiddie County in southern Virginia to free African American parents. He had an outstanding career and achieved remarkable social standing during the antebellum period. By 1850, he operated the largest furniture business in the state. His furniture is still cherished today in private homes and museums, primarily in North Carolina and Virginia.
