Literature: Gassier, Pierre and Juliet Wilson. THE LIFE AND COMPLETE WORK OF FRANCISCO GOYA WITH A CATALOGUE RAISONNE OF THE PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, AND ENGRAVINGS. Harrison House: New York, 1981.

Other Notes: The McCormick and Deering families obtained their prominence and fortune during the 19th-century American industrial age.
The McCormicks started with the invention of the McCormick Reaper, which revolutionized agriculture. The McCormick Harvesting Machine Company led the family to become one of the wealthiest families in 19th century America.
The Deerings, their leading competitors, manufactured agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and trucks. In 1902, J.P. Morgan financed a deal that merged the Deering Harvester Company with McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and formed International Harvester Company.
Robert Hall McCormick II (1847-1917) indulged in a passion for horses, yachting, and art. He was known for having the finest collections of British master paintings in America. Some of these works were exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.
Leander Hamilton McCormick (1859-1934) was an important collector of paintings, old armor, ancient pottery, old ivories, primitive glassware, sculpture, and objets d'art while living in abroad. His art collection included 200 examples of the Italian, early English and old masters Dutch schools.
Charles Deering (1852-1927) was an American businessman, art collector, philanthropist, and heir to Deering Harvester Company. Charles and his brother James (1859-1925) both developed a strong interest in the fine arts at an early age. Charles passionately amassed an extraordinary collection of works with an affinity for Spanish arts, devoting most of his life to art collecting and to the creation of several estates in America and Europe. Deering dreamed of creating an art center in Spain, and in 1910 he commissioned artist Miquel Utrillo, who built the Palau Maricel. The monumental stone villa was completed in 1918, situated on the Balearic coast in the town of Sitgaes, south of Barcelona. By 1922, along with Deering Estate in Biscayne Bay, Florida and his other properties, his fine art collection was valued at $60 million dollars. At the time of his death, the collection totaled more than 4,000 pieces of art, and was considered to be one of the largest collections of art in the world.
It is unknown how this painting descended in the McCormick and Deering collections. The seated figure is reminiscent of the one in Goya's 1777 painting "El Quitasol" in the collection of Museo Nacional Del Prado. The painting exhibits several characteristics of the painting style during this period. The forementioned volume by Gassier and Wilson discusses his studies for tapestries in a similar size. See GW268, 349 and 882 for other works by Goya from the McCormick collection.
