Other Notes: The sitter is possibly Catherine Spencer, granddaughter of David Utley of Rome, New York, who was the daughter of Harvey D. Spencer and the daughter of David Utley with most likely his second wife, Catherine Marsh Utley. If the sitter was a Spencer from this area, it also is possible that the sitter was a relative of the artist, F.R. Spencer. Frederick Randolph Spencer was born in Lenox, New York on June 7, 1806. In 1825, he went to New York to study and drew from the casts at the American Academy, where he received instruction from John Trumbell. In 1827, he began painting professionally, and worked in Canastota, Albany, Utica and other towns around New York. Eventually, he made New York City his headquarters. Spencer was fully admitted to the National Academy in 1846 and served as its corresponding secretary from 1849-50. He retired to upstate New York in 1858, and died in Wampsville, New York on April 3, 1875.
