Description:

French carved walnut wingback chair mid 19th century, bead-and-channel frame embellished with rosettes and acanthus, serpentine back surmounted by flowerheads and ribbons, with shaped sides extending to ram's-head handrests flanking loose seat cushion, on cabriole legs with scroll toes; BH46 1/4" SH19" W29 3/4" D28"

Provenance: Columbia, South Carolina private collection

Other Notes: Card accompanying chair reads: This chair was purchased while they were living in Paris. This came from a plantation in Hancock County, Georgia. The name of the plantation is Covey-Dawn (famous for quail hunting). The owner of the plantation was Mrs. Frances Brown, the widow of John David Brown. John David Brown was the author of a novel entitled ADDIE PRAY. It was from the novel that the movie PAPER MOON was drawn. It starred Ryan O'Neal and his daughter Tatum. Mr. Brown was a correspondent for Time Magazine, stationed in Paris for a number of years. Upon returning they moved to Georgia and settled in Hancock County when they purchased this plantation. They enjoyed having their friends from the North come during the quail season. Mrs. Brown "carried on" for several years after his death - then decided to sell. She was moving to a smaller place, hence the sale of some of the furniture.
