Description:

French Empire parcel-gilt mahogany bergere, attributed to Jacob Freres "Jacob Desmalter" circa 1810, reeded and leaf-decorated crestrail, padded back, armrest and seat with cushion, turned carved column supports with gilt bronze figural mounts, bowed seatrail, turned legs, frame decorated with rosettes and bellflowers; BH38 1/2" SH17" W28" D24"

Other Notes: This bergere can be considered the blend of the Neoclassical, Consulate and French Empire styles. The monumental form and gilt decoration against patinated mahogany and bronze heads are characteristic of the firms Jacob-Freres and Jacob-Desmalter of this period.

    Condition:
  • Fabric worn and heavily soiled. Nicks to gilding. Three decorative carvings with chips. Front rail missing approximately 4" of carved bellflower. Some loss to finish, mostly around feet. Scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use.
