Literature: HENRY HUDDLESTON ROGERS COLLECTION OF SHIP MODELS, 1879-1935. Annapolis, Naval Institute Press: US Naval Academy, 1971.

Other Notes: Railroad executive Henry Huddleston Rogers, Jr. (1879-1935) amassed a collection of ship and boat models which he bequeathed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1935. The collection is considered one of the most valuable of its type in the world. The example offered remained in the family and descended to the present owner.

About these models:
These bone ship models are exceptionally rare. French prisoners-of-war crafted theses extraordinary models while kept under deplorable conditions during the Anglo-French wars (1756-1815). Models and other objects were carved from the bones of the beef rations allowed to the prisoners while incarcerated in England. This example was probably created during Napoleonic Wars. While not built to scale, these highly detailed miniatures exhibit superb details and craftsmanship.

About the Frigate:
The Berlin was commissioned in 1674 and was built in Holland, she was named after the German capital. She measured 80 foot long and 22 feet and was part of an eight ship fleet. By 1676 she was outfitted with 15 cast-iron guns served by 40-50 soldiers, and sailed by a crew of 35 sailors. There are few accounts of naval skirmishes: in 1675 overpowered the French frigate Royal De Dunkerque; 1676-1677 the she captured the Swedish schooner Maria, Fireship Leopard, and Boejers Ekorren. It is known that by 1684 the ship lay in Brandenburg fleet base at Emden, Germany; and by 1688 she was seized by the Dutch West Indies Company at Fida on the coast of Guinea.
