French pocket sundial and compass, signed Nicolas Bion circa 1700, horizontal hexagonal engraved dial-plate, set with glass-covered compass, marked: N Bion A Paris, with hinged, engraved, and bird-decorated gnomon; reverse engraved with latitudes of twenty-five French and European cities; in felt-lined fitted case; dial H2 5/8" W2 3/8" D1/4"

Other Notes: Bion (French, 1652-1733) served as royal maker of mathematical instruments under King Louis XIV and, in 1709, published an influential and abundantly illustrated treatise titled THE CONSTRUCTION AND PRINCIPAL USES OF MATHEMATICAL INSTRUMENTS.
