French School (17th/18th century) PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF MADAME LA VALLIERE, A FAVORITE OF LOUIS XVI (possibly) , facing left, wearing athick silk dressing gown of pearl gray with a touch of roses on the lower front and a black silk ribbon decoration:, very low cut with breast partially exposed, obviously a lover's portrait watercolour onivory; in an ormolu frame, surmounted with a ribbon and bow crest signed: lower right, illegibly, Greu?? H 2in W 2.125in *Note: In volume III of Le Viconite de Bragellone by Alexander Dumas, there is a recounting of the story of Louis XIV and Louise de La Valliere havinga meeting with an artist to have her portrait painted.
