Other Notes: The first of three bronze casts of Gaston Lachaise's Torso (Ogunquit Torso [LF 112] ordered by his widow from the Modern Art Foundry, New York City, in 1946 for an important exhibition of Lachaise's works held at the prestigious Knoedler Gallery in January-February 1947, the present work was acquired by Millicent Rogers in the following April. It is one of two sculptures of torsos by Lachaise acquired by Rogers (see Parke-Bernet Galleries, January 19, 1955, lot 43.)

Other casts of Torso (Ogunquit Torso [LF 112] include those owned by the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester; the Fogg Museum, Harvard Art Museums; the Ogunquit Museum of American Art; and the Colby College Museum of Art. The Lachaise Foundation owns the plaster model, and has assigned the identification number LF 112 to the work. In the second half of the 20th century the sculpture was given the name "Ogunquit Torso" because of the mistaken view that the very first bronze cast of the work is the one owned by the Ogunquit Museum.
