Other Notes: Thomas Sidney Jesup (1788-1860) was an American military officer known as the "Father of the Modern Quartermaster Corps". Born in Berkeley County, West Virginia, Jesup's military career began in 1808, and he served in the War of 1812, as well as having seen action at the battles of Chippewa and Niagara. President James Monroe appointed him Adjutant General and Quartermaster General in 1818. General Jesup served in the position for 42 years, holding the record for the longest continual service in the same position in U.S. military history.
