Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Soup Tureen Copenhagen, circa 1930, oval lid with melon, grape cluster and curled leaf finial, conforming body raised on double pinecone and leaf feet; underside engraved with dedication: Presented to the Right Reverend William Thomas Manning with the Affection of the Clergy and Laity of the Diocese of New York in Grateful Recognition of Ten Years of Consecrated Service 1921-1931; and marked: Sterling Silver, GI 925 S in beaded circle, Georg Jensen in beaded oval with crown, #340, Denmark; H13 1/4" W13 1/2" D11", and Total 106.2ozT

Provenance: Gift to the present owner, a South Carolina private collector.

Other Notes: Reverend William Thomas Manning (1866-1949) was born in Northampton, England, and immigrated to American in 1882. Manning studied at the University of the South and graduated in 1894 with a Bachelor of Divinity. From 1891 to 1903, he held various cleric and professorship positions across the U.S. In 1903 Manning became a Vicar of St. Agnes' in New York. During World War I, Rev. Manning served as a volunteer chaplain at Camp Upton; for his service, he was awarded Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur of France and an officer of the Order of the Crown of Belgium. After the war, he became Bishop of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Manning led a $10,000,000 capital campaign to rebuild the church. Under his direction, the cathedral employed and trained neighborhood men as skilled stonemasons and carvers during the decades of the continuing project. Manning was recognized and appointed the 10th Bishop of New York in 1921, which he held until his retirement in 1946.
This tureen presented to Manning 1931 in recognition of his decade-long service in the Episcopal Diocese of New York.
