Description:

George II silver tea caddies in shagreen case, Aldridge & Stamper London, dated 1753-4, (Edward Aldridge & John Stamper, wk. 1745-c.1780) inverted pear form caddies with domed covers, diminutive reticulated swing-handle cake basket, each in floral-and-garland design, with Rococo cartouches engraved with arms of FOYLE impailing HAYTER; accompanied by matching silver-mounted shagreen box with silver braid-trimmed red velvet, mounted on claw feet, bail-handle, escutcheon plate cartouche engraved with conforming coat-of-arms; most with complete hallmarks; caddies H6 1/2", basket H5 1/4" L5 3/4", and case H8 1/2" W13" D5 3/4", and 24.0ozT

Provenance: New York collection

Other Notes: The male arms are those of Foyle of Dorset and Wiltshire in the West Country of England. In the 20th century, the family is best known for Foyle's Bookshop and their restoration of Beeleigh Abbey in the county of Essex.

It appears that the caddy set was a gift to celebrate the marriage of Rev. Edward Foyle of Wiltshire to Anne Hayter of Newton Tony on 1 January 1755.

Special thanks to Angela Howard, Heirloom & Howard for research and identification of Foyle and Hayter arms.
